About the Audio Extractor
This free tool extracts the sound from a video: a concert filmed on a phone, a lecture, an interview, a tutorial or a clip whose music you want to keep. Open the video, choose the whole file or only a part, pick a format and download the audio file. The video is read and processed by your own browser; it is never sent to a server.
The Original, lossless option copies the soundtrack exactly as it is stored in the video, without re-encoding: it is the fastest option and keeps 100% of the quality. The other formats convert the sound to MP3, WAV, M4A (AAC) or Opus.
Key Features
- Lossless extraction: AAC sound becomes an .m4a file, Opus an .opus file, MP3 an .mp3 file, FLAC a .flac file, all bit-for-bit identical to the original.
- Conversion: MP3 from 128 to 320 kbit/s, WAV 16 or 24 bit, M4A (AAC) and Opus, with an optional mono mix.
- Only the part you need: type a start and an end, or take them from the player.
- Information: audio codec, channels, sample rate, bitrate and duration of the soundtrack.
How to Use the Tool
- Step 1: open a video by clicking the area above or dropping it there.
- Step 2: keep “Whole file” or choose “Only a part” and set Start and End (the “Player” buttons use the current position of the preview).
- Step 3: choose “Original, lossless” for maximum quality, or MP3 for a file that plays everywhere.
- Step 4: click “Extract the sound”; the file is downloaded when it is ready.
Common Use Cases
- Turn a recorded lecture, meeting or podcast video into an audio file to listen to on the go.
- Keep the music or the speech of a phone video, for a slideshow or an edit.
- Get a WAV file of a video's soundtrack to clean it up in an audio editor.
- Extract a short sound to make a ringtone or a notification sound.
Tips & Best Practices
- Which format? “Original” when you want the best quality and speed; MP3 192 kbit/s for music players and cars; WAV for editing; M4A for Apple devices.
- M4A (AAC) encoding depends on the browser: Chrome and Edge on Windows and macOS and Safari usually support it; when it is not available, the option is disabled. If the video already has AAC sound, “Original” gives you an .m4a anyway.
- A video with no sound (screen recording, muted clip) has nothing to extract: the tool tells you so.
- Large files: the audio file is built in memory; for very long videos, prefer a computer to a phone.
Privacy & Security
The video is read and processed only in your browser: it is never uploaded, stored or analysed on a server, and the tool sends no data over the network. The audio file does not keep location or creation-date metadata. Reading and writing media files relies on Mediabunny 1.62.1 (Mozilla Public License 2.0), MP3 encoding on lamejs 1.2.1 (LGPL), both served from this site.
