About the chip distribution calculator

Before a home tournament, the same question always comes up: what is each chip worth, and how many of each color does every player get? This calculator starts from the chips you actually own and finds a distribution that is easy to play with: round values, enough small chips to post the blinds, and the same starting stack for everyone.

How it works

  • Smallest chip = small blind: the first color is worth the small blind, so the first blinds can be paid without making change.
  • Chip-friendly values: each value is a multiple of the previous one (25, 50, 100, 500, 1,000…), so change is always possible.
  • Target stack: by default about 200 big blinds (10,000 with 25/50 blinds), the usual depth for a relaxed tournament.
  • At least 8 small chips per player: otherwise players keep asking for change.
  • Uses your chips: the tool distributes as many chips as possible and shows what is left in the set.

How to use

  • Choose a common set (300, 500 or 1,000 chips) or enter your own colors and quantities
  • Order the colors from lowest to highest value with ▲ ▼
  • Enter the number of players and the starting small blind
  • Optional: set a target stack, fixed values, or rebuys to keep aside
  • Copy the result, then build the blind structure for this stack in one click

Example: 500-chip set, 8 players

  • Values: white 25, red 50, green 100, blue 500, black 2,500
  • Per player: 18 white, 17 red, 12 green, 5 blue, 2 black
  • Starting stack: 10,000 chips, i.e. 200 big blinds with 25/50 blinds
  • Tip: keep the chips left in the set for rebuys and for coloring up small chips later in the tournament

Tips

  • Color up: when the blinds rise, exchange the smallest chips for larger ones during a break.
  • Fixed values: if your chips have printed values, enter them; the tool only computes the quantities.
  • Many players: if there are not enough chips, lower the target stack or use a larger set.
  • Rebuys: each rebuy set aside reserves one full stack in the set.
