About the Tile Calculator
How many boxes of tiles should you order, and how many bags of adhesive and grout? This calculator starts from the real area of your rooms, openings deducted, adds the waste suited to the layout and estimates adhesive and grout using manufacturers’ rules.
How to Use the Calculator
- Enter your zones in metres (length × width), and add the openings to deduct (door, window, shower tray…).
- Enter the tile size in cm, its thickness and the joint width in mm.
- Pick the layout: the waste is set automatically and stays editable.
- Enter the area per box (printed on the carton) and, if you like, the price per m².
- Check the suggested notch and back-buttering, then copy the shopping list.
Formulas Used
- Waste: 10% for straight or offset lays, 15% for diagonal, 20% for herringbone. Allow 15% for a complex room or large-format tiles.
- Tiles and boxes: area × (1 + waste), divided by the area of one tile or one box, rounded up.
- Adhesive: about 3 kg/m² with a 6 mm notch (tiles up to 500 cm²), 4 kg/m² with a 9 mm notch, 5 kg/m² with a half-moon trowel, plus 1.5 kg/m² when back-buttering (weber.col souple data sheet).
- Grout: consumption (kg/m²) = (L + W) ÷ (L × W) × thickness × joint width × density, with L and W the tile length and width in mm. This is the formula published by grout manufacturers, with a density of 1.5 to 1.6 depending on the product.
- Example: 60 × 60 cm tile, 9 mm thick, 3 mm joint: 1,200 ÷ 360,000 × 9 × 3 × 1.6 ≈ 0.14 kg/m².
Tips
- Keep a few spare tiles to replace a broken one later: shades vary from one production batch to another.
- Check the batch number (shade and size) on every carton before you start.
- Large formats: above about 2,000 cm² (e.g. 45 × 45 cm), back-buttering is generally required for full adhesive coverage.
- Plan the layout first to centre the tiles and avoid thin cuts along the edges.
Common Mistakes and Limits
- Forgetting skirting or wall tiles: add them as separate zones, running metres × height.
- Mixing cm and m: rooms are entered in metres, the tile in centimetres.
- Uneven substrate: an uneven floor uses more adhesive than the values shown.
- Estimate only: actual consumption depends on the product; the manufacturer’s data sheet always prevails.
